JESUS DID PROVIDE FOR US

Testimony of daily provision
“Give us this day our daily bread.”
Matthew 6:11

Going through seminary when you’re married with children can be a financial burden. For years, my wife Lois performed miracles with our money to make it stretch enough to put food on the table and keep us clothed. But one morning, she looked very discouraged. “Tony, I just can’t do this anymore. It’s too hard.” She’d reached a point where the burden was too heavy.

I was also convinced of my call, and believed God would provide when He asked me to do something. To hear my wife’s lament was confusing; it made me wonder how God could let things get to this point.

Knowing that my primary responsibility was to meet the needs of my family first, I chose to drop out of seminary and get a full-time job. I told Lois of my plan.

Then I asked her one thing: What would she need to receive today in order to keep the seminary dream alive? I asked for a specific dollar amount.

She thought about it a while. Finally, she said, “$500.”

So guess what I did? You better believe it: I prayed.

Making my way to the seminary campus for what looked like my last day of classes, I went to the mailroom to get my mail from my box. When I opened it up, I saw five $100 bills attached to a note from a man named John Maisel. He said that God had told him to give this to me today.

It was exactly the amount Lois had told me she needed—and the amount I had asked God to provide. It was a literal illustration of what Jesus had taught us to pray in the Lord’s prayer, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). That day – the “daily bread” was $500. And God provided exactly that. I hadn’t gone around looking for the money or even asking people – I only asked God. And He supplied.

For his kingdom,
